Economic and educational linkages in the Gauteng City-Region

The proposed project explores the role of the Gauteng Provincial Government as a provider of schooling and as an intermediary in skills formation. The research will explore two broad areas. First, the linkages between the education system and economic planning, through initiatives such as "schools of specialisation". Second, the Gauteng Provincial Government has played a role as an intermediary in the skills system through providing internships and training to young adults to be trained as solar technicians and in cellular phone repairs. The research will focus on these case studies and evaluate the possibilities for the state to play an intermediary role in linking young adults to opportunities in high demand economic sectors. This will be a joint project with the Gauteng Department of Education.
