Industrial and commercial growth

New industrial and commercial buildings in 2010 that were not present in 2001 in Gauteng make up the last map of the month for 2013. Industrial and commercial growth is shown using a point density map of new buildings per square kilometre. The GeoTerraImage (GTI) data (2001 and 2010 release 2013 set 1) indicates a 17.2% increase in industrial buildings and 25.7% increase in commercial buildings. The spatial distribution of new industrial buildings is evenly spread out over the entire province with a few areas of concentration in western parts, e.g. Johannesburg. The same can be noted for commercial buildings, concentrated along the main roads. The past decade has also seen the development of a number of new shopping malls and centres.
