  • Date of publication: 06 July 2021

GCRO is proud to announce that our report, ‘Towards applying a green infrastructure approach in the GCR’, has been selected as the winner of the 2019/20 AfriSam-SAIA Sustainable Design Award for ‘Research in sustainability’.

The AfriSam-SAIA Sustainable Design Award recognises contemporary projects that foster sustainability through innovative architecture and design. The award pays particular attention to projects that consider the complex and interrelated social, environmental and economic challenges faced within South Africa. On 10 June 2021, the winners of the 2019/20 Award were announced virtually. Submissions were accepted in four categories including Sustainable architecture, Research in sustainability, Sustainable products and technologies +, and Sustainable social programmes.

GCRO’s featured report is the third in the series and builds on the foundations laid in the first two reports and phases of the GCRO’s Green Assets and Infrastructure project. This project has progressed from establishing the theoretical potential of applying green infrastructure in the Gauteng City-Region to exploring ways in which the theoretical green infrastructure approach could be applied in this context. The report demonstrates how a number of green infrastructure projects have been implemented, and provides practical guidance for applying a green infrastructure approach more systematically throughout Gauteng. This report presents the application of a green infrastructure approach in technical detail to further establish the case and specifically speaks to practical aspects that might be of particular interest to project managers and government officials.
