GCRO recently co-hosted the Sport and the City Conference with the School of Architecture and Planning at the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) and the Johannesburg Development Agency (JDA).

The conference “Sport and the City: Impacts and Effects of Mega-Events on Urban Development” was held at Wits University on 26-27th March 2012 and brought together a wide range of academics, students and other key stakeholders. Dr Danny Jordaan, vice president of the South African Football Association (SAFA), former CEO of the 2010 World Cup organising committee and currently special advisor to the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, opened the conference with a presentation on the broad legacy of the 2010 World Cup for South Africa. The conference was an opportunity for GCRO to formally release the findings of its longitudinal study on the legacy of the 2010 World Cup on small and micro-scale businesses in Gauteng; a cohort understood to have significant economic needs and most likely to benefit from job creation and entrepreneurial opportunities offered by the World Cup . The results of GCRO’s research lent context to the two central issues of the conference; impact and legacy. GCRO Executive Director David Everatt presented overall findings of the survey. Senior Researcher Annsilla Nyar addressed the impact of the World Cup on issues of social cohesion through the World Cup’s emphasis on nation-building and African unity using a number of key findings from the survey.
