Dr Darlington Mushongera participates in "Beyond GDP" Podcast

  • Date of publication: 04 April 2022

Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is one of the most well-known and powerful measures in the world, yet it fails to represent the many realities of life that people confront. For this reason, reliance on GDP as a measure of economic welfare has been called into question. The Beyond GDP movement challenges the prevalence of GDP, calling for a shift in focus to well-being and other measures that try to capture progress towards it. GCRO Senior Researcher, Dr Darlington Mushongera spoke to Catherine Langsford of Indaba Down South on how GDP came to be a popular measure of development, what its flows are, and how GDP could be complemented to give a more holistic and accurate picture of development for any country.
