Class formation and rising inequality in South Africa: What does this mean for future voting patterns?

David Everatt was approached by Moeletsi Mbeki to write a chapter on class formation, inequality, and voting in South Africa, for Moeletsi’s new book ‘Advocates for Change’. This combines David’s work as a pollster for the ruling party since 1994 with his work at GCRO. The chapter focuses on class formation, the rise of the ‘black middle class’ - however weakly theorised and understood – and shows that South Africa enjoys robust political plurality.
