In July 2009, the Gauteng MEC for Economic Development and the Department of Economic Development asked GCRO to do a quick turn-around ‘benchmarking’ study of how cities and city-regions in other parts of the world were being affected by the economic crisis, how they were responding, and what lessons can be learnt for Gauteng. The paper was submitted in mid August.

The GCRO’s work on the responses of cities and city-regions to the global financial crisis indicated that creating ‘green jobs’, and investing in a low carbon future, would be key to counter-cyclical spending world-wide.

Metropolis is an international association of member cities and city-regions. It provides a forum for leaders of agglomerations over 1 million people to share learning and explore issues of common concern. The work of Metropolis is driven through Standing Commissions.

This work was suggested by the Head of the Gauteng Planning Commission in July 2009, and independently, by Prof Adam Habib at the same time.
