It is with great sadness that we hear of the passing of Ahmed Kathrada this morning. Uncle Kathy stands in our memory as an undaunted warrior in the struggle for democracy in our country, but also as a humanist with a deep desire and determination to see a just and reconciled society. At a personal level, he stands as a powerful role model for how to carry forward a deep social commitment, not least in his humility and unfailing care for those around him.

While we join the family and comrades in grieving his passing, we also celebrate a life that has been fulfilled with extraordinary clarity of vision, courage and integrity. Our society is immensely richer for his life.

Ahmed Kathrada, and his foundation, have played an invaluable role in developing and supporting GCRO's work on non-racialism and anti-racism. We feel privileged to have published alongside him.
