Ahmed Kathrada Foundation Non-racialism Conference
Programme for Ahmed Kathrada Foundation Conference ‘Non–racialism in Post Apartheid South Africa: contemporary meanings and relevance’
The conference brings together a number of critical thinkers and insttutions that will each present their interpretations on non-racialism and its contemporary meanings in South Africa. The presenters, respondents and the broader audience that will attend are activists, academics, and policy-makers, and, in light of the robust discussion envisaged, the conference will ultimately result in a set of ideas on what needs to be done to progress, at a faster pace, towards a truly non-racial South Africa.
The Foundation sees the set of clear and pragmatic ideas, which will emerge from the broader discussion in the conference, as the most important focus of such an endeavor. As mentioned, the purpose of the conference is not academic discourse, neither is it only the presentation of research projects commissioned by the Foundation on non-racialism. The ultimate purpose is for each of the participants, and different state, civil society, and research institutions to emerge with a set of ideas that will drive a collective effort to advance non-racialism.
The two-day conference, which will take place from the 13th to the 14th of October 2011 will culminate in the Ahmed Kathrada Foundation's Annual Lecture (15th October 2011), and will also align with more global debates taking place in 2011 to assess progress made 10 years on since the World Conference Against Racism. The High Commissioner of the UNHCR will deliver the keynote address.
